Blast gate guide: why gates leak, stick, and what fixes it
A blast gate is a sliding door in your duct. Open it and one tool gets the air. Close it and the air goes somewhere else. That is the whole job. Two things go wrong, and shop owners report both over and over: gates leak air when they are shut, and dust packs the track until the gate will not shut at all.

What is a blast gate and do I need one?
A blast gate is a shutoff valve in a dust duct. It opens or closes the air to one branch. You need gates once your collector feeds more than one machine, because otherwise the air splits between every open branch and the tool you are using gets less of it.
One machine, one hose, no branches? You do not need a gate yet. The moment you add a second drop, you do. A collector only has so much air to give. Every open branch takes a share, even the ones with nothing running on them.
That is why the gate matters more than most people expect. It is not a convenience part. It is the part that decides where your suction goes.
Why is my blast gate leaking air when it is closed?
Most closed-gate leaks come from the slot the blade slides in. The blade needs room to move, and that room is an open air path. Packed dust under the blade holds it a little open too. Some gates leak for a simpler reason: they were mounted backward.
Here is the part people miss. A leak does not only cost the branch it is on. Suction is shared across the whole system, so a leak anywhere pulls from everywhere. Shop owners who chase this agree on one thing: no single leak looks big enough to matter, and together they measurably cut your airflow.
So treat a leaking gate like a leaking joint. Fix it, then check the rest of your fittings while you are at it.
Why does my blast gate get stuck and not close all the way?
Fine dust falls into the track under the blade. Pushing the blade closed packs that dust into a hard plug, so the blade stops before it seals. This is the single most repeated blast gate failure people report, and it gets worse the longer a gate sits.
Mounting helps. Turn the gate so the open side of the track points down or sideways. Then loose dust falls out of the track instead of settling into it. That is not always possible against a wall or up in the joists, which is part of why the problem is so common.
One builder taped a flap over the open side of a shop-built gate. Suction folds the flap shut to help seal the gap, and the flap flexes open so trapped debris pushes out. It is one person's trick, not a tested standard, but it shows the shape of the fix: the track needs somewhere to dump what falls into it.
Why do cheap plastic blast gates stop sealing?
Thin plastic gates draw more complaints than any other part in this category. The three problems people name are an inside lip that narrows the opening, a slide that leaks, and a track that packs with dust. Those are shape problems, not proof that plastic is the wrong material.
We should say plainly that we sell printed plastic gates, so we have a stake in that distinction. Here is the evidence that it is a real one. The best sealing gate described anywhere in the shop reports we read was made of wood. It was cut to the true outside diameter of the pipe, with the pipe ends nearly touching inside the gate body. No gap to leak through, in either position.
Wood is not a magic material. The geometry is what did the work. Any material can hold that geometry, and any material can be molded thin with a lip in the bore. Judge a gate by its shape and its dimensions, not by the word on the label.
Are plastic gates good enough, or should I get metal?
It depends more on how the gate is built than on what it is built from. Metal gates cost more and still leak around the slide, and a bent metal blade will not seal at all. Plastic gates get criticized for thin bodies and packed tracks. The gate that sealed best in the reports we read was wood.

Which way should a blast gate face?
Many gates have a right way round. Look for a small adjusting screw or a marked side, which usually faces the tool. Mounted backward, the blade sits on the wrong side of the seal and the gate leaks even when it looks shut.
There is a second question of direction, and it is the one that keeps the gate working. Point the open side of the blade track down or sideways. Dust falls out. Point it up and the track becomes a cup.
Where should I put my blast gates?
Put gates close to the main trunk line, not out at each machine. A gate at the trunk shuts the whole branch. A gate at the machine leaves the branch pipe behind it open, and that open pipe keeps bleeding air off the tool you are running.
Plenty of shops mount them at the machine anyway, and those shops work fine. Reach is the reason. A gate you have to duck under a bench to grab is a gate you will leave open, and an open gate you forgot about costs you more than a few feet of pipe ever will.
One more trick worth stealing: mount the gate where you can see it. A handle you can read as open or closed from across the room saves a walk, every single cut.
Do I need to ground a plastic blast gate?
Metal gates are usually tied into the same ground wire as the rest of the metal in a duct run. A plastic or acrylic gate has no metal to bond, so there is nothing to tie in.
Whether grounding plastic duct does anything at all is a live argument among shop owners. Some run a wire and say the shocks stopped. One electrician tested plastic pipe with a meter and argued an outside wire only drains the spot it touches. We are not going to settle that here, and we do not make any static claim about our parts.

Can a blast gate open by itself when I turn on a tool?
Yes. People do it with a small motor or an air cylinder on the gate, plus a sensor clipped to the tool power cord. The tool draws current, the sensor sees it, the gate opens and the collector starts. Those parts are electronics, not fittings, and we do not sell them.
Two lessons come up in every automated build. First, add a shutdown delay or the collector will cycle every time you pause. Builders pick very different numbers for it: around ten seconds at a table saw, closer to a minute at a miter station where you stop to measure between cuts. Tune it to how you actually work.
Second, let the fan spin down before a gate closes. Slamming a gate shut against a running impeller strains the motor, and it can collapse thin duct from the pressure change.
One more that catches people: a floor sweep branch has no tool to sense. That branch needs a manual button, or it never opens.
Can I build my own blast gate?
Yes, and shop-built gates work well. Two builds show up most. Cut a 4 inch PVC coupling in half and mount the halves to plywood. Or machine a wood body to the true measured diameter of your pipe, so the pipe ends almost touch inside the gate.
The second one is the better seal, and it only works if you use real numbers. One builder measured nominal 4 inch thin-wall sewer pipe at about 4.215 inches across the outside, which is about 107 mm. Nominal 6 inch measured about 6.25 inches, about 159 mm. The trade name on the pipe is not the size of the pipe.
Those are one person's measurements of one type of pipe. Wall thickness changes with the schedule, the brand and the country, so measure the pipe in your own hands before you cut anything.

How our gate handles the two failures
Both failures on this page come from the same place: a closed track that traps what falls into it. So we did not build a track. The blade rides in an open gap between two flanges. Close the gate and the loose dust falls straight out the bottom of that gap instead of packing under the blade, so the blade keeps meeting the same clean path run after run.
