PVC or metal duct, which should you run?

Neither one wins everywhere. PVC is cheaper, sold everywhere, and very smooth inside. Purpose-made metal duct has better shaped fittings and comes apart when you move the shop around. Most home shops run PVC and spend the savings on the joints, which is where the airflow is actually lost.

The bigger trap is not the material at all. It is that pipe sizes are trade names, not measurements. Nominal 4 inch PVC is not 4 inches. That gap is why a fitting labeled the same size as your pipe will not seat on it, and it is the reason this whole category of problem exists.

Flex hose is in the table because most shops use all three. Rigid pipe runs the trunk and the branches. Flex hose only covers the short drop to a tool that moves.

Can I use PVC pipe for dust collection ductwork?

Yes, and most home shops do. PVC is the most common duct material in every shop build we studied. It is cheap, every hardware store has it, and the inside wall is slicker than any other option, which means air and chips move through it with less drag than through ribbed hose.

Buy thin wall drain and sewer pipe, not pressure rated pipe. Dust duct only has to move air. It never holds pressure inside the way a water line does, so the thicker, more expensive pipe buys you nothing here. Several shop builds in the guides make exactly this call.

The one place PVC costs you is the fittings. The plumbing aisle sells sharp turns because water does not care. Dust does. A sharp plumbing tee makes more drag and catches material, which is the argument for buying a purpose made fitting instead of grabbing whatever is in the bin.

Is 4 inch PVC pipe actually 4 inches?

No, and this is the single most useful thing on this page. Nominal 4 inch thin wall PVC measures about 4.2 inches across the outside. Nominal 6 inch measures about 6.25 inches. The number on the label is a trade name from the plumbing world, not the size of anything you can put calipers on.

Figures are measured pipe dimensions reported by shop builders. Pipe schedule, brand, and country all shift these. Measure your own pipe before you seal anything to it.

Now stack a second problem on top. Hose is often sized by the inside, pipe is sized by the outside, and tool ports are often described with no measurement type at all. Two parts labeled 2.5 inch from two brands may be snug, may need tape, or may not go together at all.

This is the whole reason our catalog exists. We publish the real measured size on every part instead of only the trade name, so you can check a number against a number rather than hoping two labels mean the same thing.

Practical rule: measure the outside of anything the fitting slides over, and the inside of anything the fitting slides into. Write both numbers down once. You will use them for years.

Can you use HVAC pipe for dust collection?

It is the wrong tool for the job, and three separate reasons come up. Generic sheet metal duct was designed for clean air blowing away from a furnace fan. A dust system does the opposite. It pulls dirty, gritty air toward a fan, and the duct has to be tight under suction.

  • The seams run the wrong way. They are lapped for air moving away from the blower, so pulling air the other direction means every seam is a little ridge for debris to catch on.
  • The joints were never built to stay sealed while something is pulling a vacuum on them.
  • The thin gauge sold at home centers can collapse when a larger collector pulls hard with the gates closed. Thicker spiral pipe made for dust does not.

Purpose made metal dust duct is a different product from home center HVAC pipe. It costs more, and the reason people buy it is the fitting shapes and the ability to unbolt the whole run and rebuild it somewhere else.

Should I glue or screw my duct joints?

Screw them, then seal the seams. A glued PVC system is permanent, and permanent is bad news the first time something clogs deep in a wall. Sheet metal screws hold the joint, caulk or a duct sealant closes it, and you can still take a section down when you need to.

Keep the screws short. A screw tip that pokes into the duct is a hook, and passing shavings catch on it until you have a clog. A quarter inch to a half inch is enough to hold pipe together.

Tape alone is not a seal. Fine dust works into the seam under the tape and the bond quits, usually months later when you have forgotten it was ever a question. Use tape while you test the layout, then go back and caulk what you keep.

Leaks matter more than people expect. Air that sneaks in through a loose joint is air that is not coming through your tool, and that costs you at every machine, not only at the leaky one. Small leaks add up across a shop, and each one on its own always looks too minor to bother with.

Is PVC dust collection pipe a fire hazard?

This is a real argument and this page does not settle it. Moving dust through plastic pipe builds static, and people do get shocked by it. Everything past that point is contested, and it is contested by people who have thought about it more than most.

One point almost everyone agrees on, whatever they think about static: empty the bin regularly. Every side of that argument recommends it.

Do I even need ductwork in a small shop?

Maybe not. One builder priced rigid PVC and fittings for his small shop at roughly seven hundred dollars, decided the duct would hang in the way of moving lumber, and judged his collector too small to pull through a long run anyway. He runs one flex hose and moves it between tools.

That is a real position for a real constraint set, not laziness. The tradeoff is that you plug and unplug all day, so the thing that makes it bearable is a fast connection at every machine rather than a wrestling match with a hose clamp.

If that is your shop, skip the wyes and buy connections. A magnetic dust port snaps the hose on with one hand. A quick-connect hose clamp clicks on and pulls off, so moving one hose across five machines stops being the reason you skip dust collection today.

If you are running duct, do the opposite of hurrying. Match the trunk to your collector inlet, keep it that size as long as you can, and step down only right at the tool.

One honest note. A printed fitting is not magically airtight because it was printed. One builder in the guides we read made a custom printed manifold, could not stop it leaking, and gave up on it. Seal your joints, whatever they are made of.
