These are three different machines, not three price tiers of the same one. A shop vac and a dust extractor move a small amount of air very hard. That is what pulls fine dust out of a small tool port. A dust collector moves a huge amount of air gently. That is what clears chips out of a big machine.

Pick by what your tools have on them, not by what you can spend. The wrong class does the job badly at any price. Here is what separates all three, which tools want which, and the honest case for keeping the shop vac you already own.

What is the difference between a shop vac, a dust extractor, and a dust collector?

The split is how the machine moves air. Vacuums and extractors move a small volume at high pressure, which pulls hard through a narrow hose. Collectors move a large volume at low pressure, which sweeps heavy chips down a wide duct. Everything else about these machines follows from that one difference.

What tools need a dust collector and what tools need a shop vac?

Read the port. Small ports on handheld and benchtop tools belong on a shop vac or an extractor. Big ports on stationary machines belong on a collector. Shop builders put the line somewhere between 2 and 4 inches, and no single number is agreed on, so use the table as a starting point.

Two mistakes show up more than any others. A shop vac on a planer fills and clogs almost at once. A big collector necked down to a small tool port starves for air and pulls poorly at the tool.

Do I need a dust collector, or is a shop vac enough?

If your biggest machine is a miter saw and a benchtop router table, a shop vac is enough. If you own a thickness planer, a jointer, or a cabinet saw, it is not, and no amount of upgrading changes that. Those machines make chips faster than a vacuum can swallow them.

The honest version most shops land on is both. A shop vac lives on a cart and follows the handheld tools. A collector sits in a corner with duct running to the big machines. That is not a compromise. It is two tools for two jobs.

One thing the shop vac gets that no collector does: it works well right at the tool, inches from the cut, and it picks up water. A collector cannot do either.

What does a dust extractor add over a shop vac?

Features, mostly, plus better filtration out of the box. The same list shows up in every review we studied. Fine or HEPA rated filtration. Suction you can dial down. An outlet that starts the vacuum when the tool runs. Often a filter cleaning function, motor overheat protection, and a remote. And it runs quieter.

Two of those matter most day to day. Adjustable suction is the one people mention for sanding. Full suction pulls a random orbit sander hard against the work. That fights the way the pad is meant to move, and it leaves swirl marks. Dialing it back fixes that.

The tool-activated outlet is the other one. Plug your tool into the vacuum, and the vacuum starts when the tool starts, then runs on a few seconds to clear the hose. Once you work that way, going back to reaching for a switch feels ridiculous.

A note on HEPA. It is a filter standard set at a specific particle size. On some machines the rating only holds when the matched filter and the matched bag are both in. Check the manual for yours. GulpDust does not make filters, and we make no filtration claim about anything we sell.

How loud is a dust extractor compared to a shop vac?

Quieter, and it is one of the few differences you feel in the first five minutes. Readings across shop tests land roughly between 74 and 90 decibels. Shop vacs sit at the top of that range at full power. Extractors sit lower, and lower again when you turn the suction down.

Take those numbers loosely. Every one of them came from a phone app, not a calibrated sound meter. They tell you the direction, not the exact gap.

Noise is worth more than it looks on a spec sheet if you work in a shared garage, an attached shop, or a customer home. A machine you are willing to leave running is a machine that actually collects dust.

Can I upgrade a shop vac instead of buying an extractor?

Yes, and the people who priced it out carefully say it gets close. One detailed comparison put an upgraded shop vac near a premium extractor on raw suction and filtration. It cost roughly a quarter to a third as much. What the extra money buys is convenience, not power.

The upgrade stack people describe has five parts:

  1. A fine dust bag. Do this first. The bag protects everything downstream of it, and a general debris bag lets fine dust straight back into the room.
  2. A better filter behind the bag.
  3. An auto start switch, so the vac runs when the tool runs.
  4. An anti-static hose, if the shocks bother you.
  5. A separator lid on a bucket, so chips drop out before they ever reach the filter.

Be clear about what we make. Of those five, GulpDust sells one: the separator lid. The bag, the filter, the switch, and the hose all come from somewhere else. We are not going to pretend otherwise.

What you still will not have after all five: adjustable suction and wireless control. If you sand for hours, that first one is the reason to buy the extractor anyway.

Single stage or two stage dust collector?

A single stage pulls everything through one fan and into one bag or filter. A two stage drops most of the debris out first, usually in a cyclone, so only fine dust reaches the filter. Two stage machines cost more and take more room, and the filter stays clean far longer.

The reason that matters is simple. Suction falls off sharply as a filter loads with fine dust, even though the motor is still turning at full speed. Keeping the filter clean is the cheapest airflow you will ever get back.

You can get most of that benefit on a single stage machine, or on a shop vac, by adding a separator ahead of it. Fair warning: a separator costs you some airflow, because it adds a stage and more turns. Every source agrees on that direction. Nobody agrees on the number, and the figures people quote range widely enough that we will not repeat one.

A separator also has a known failure mode nobody warns you about. Let the bin overfill and debris passes straight through to the machine. Empty it on a schedule, not when it looks full.

The problem every one of these machines gives you next

The hose will not fit your tool. It does not matter which class you bought or what you spent. Shop vac hoses come in 1-1/4, 1-7/8, and 2-1/2 inch. Extractors use 27, 32, 36, or 50 mm. Collectors use 4 inch. Your tools use none of those consistently.

Pipe is sized by the outside, hose is often sized by the inside, and tool ports are often labeled with no measurement type at all.
