DeWalt's cordless shop vac lineup has two popular portable units: the DCV517B and the DCV586B. They look similar on the shelf, but they use different hose sizes. This matters for the adapters you need to connect your tools.

The Hose Size Difference Matters
The DCV517B uses a 1-1/4 inch (31.75mm inner diameter) hose. This is smaller than the standard 1-7/8 inch shop vac hose. It creates higher air velocity in the hose, which is actually good for small tool connections. But it means the adapter you need is different.
The DCV586B uses a standard 1-7/8 inch (47.6mm inner diameter) hose. This is the same size as most shop vacs. Any adapter that works for a standard shop vac works for the DCV586B.
Which Adapter for the DCV517B
For DeWalt 20V MAX tools (DCS570, DCS391, etc.) with the DCV517B:
You need a 32mm to 31.75mm adapter. The 32mm end fits the tool port. The 31.75mm end fits the DCV517B's 1-1/4 inch hose.
For Makita tools (36mm port) with the DCV517B:
You need a 36mm to 31.75mm adapter.
The DCV517B's smaller hose also means adapters for it are less common. Make sure you are ordering the right size.
Which Adapter for the DCV586B
For DeWalt 20V MAX tools with the DCV586B:
You need a standard 32mm to 47.6mm adapter. Same adapter as for any standard shop vac.
For Makita tools with the DCV586B:
You need a 36mm to 47.6mm adapter.
The DCV586B's standard hose size means you can use the same adapters for the DCV586B as for any Ridgid, Craftsman, or other standard shop vac.
Which Should You Buy?
DCV517B is the better choice if:
- You already own DeWalt 20V MAX batteries (it uses them)
- You want the most compact and lightest cordless vac
- You mostly use it for light cleanup and small tool connections
DCV586B is the better choice if:
- You own FLEXVOLT batteries or want a runtime upgrade
- You want to use the same adapters as your standard shop vac
- You connect tools from multiple brands (the standard hose size is more universal)
If you are building a DeWalt tool system from scratch, the DCV586B is the more flexible choice. The standard 1-7/8 inch hose size means one adapter per tool works for both the DCV586B and any backup shop vac you own.
